HumaniBench: A Human-Centric Framework for Large Multimodal Models Evaluation

Paper arXiv cs.CV (recent)

Although recent large multimodal models (LMMs) show impressive progress on vision language tasks, their alignment with human centered (HC) principles such as fairness, ethics, inclusivity, empathy, and robustness is often overlooked. Existing LMM benchmarks are largely accuracy-agnostic. We present HumaniBench, a unified framework for characterizing HC alignment across realistic, socially grounded visual contexts. It contains 32,000 expert-verified image-question pairs from real-world news imagery, each mapped to one or more HC principles through explicit metrics. Comparing 15 state of the art LMMs reveals consistent trade -offs: proprietary systems lead on ethics, reasoning, and empathy, while open-source models show superior visual grounding and resilience. All models show persistent gaps in fairness and multilingual inclusivity. Chain-of-thought prompting and test-time scaling yield 8to 12 % gains on several HC dimensions. HumaniBench enables fine-grained analysis of alignment trade-offs not captured by conventional multimodal benchmarks. https://vectorinstitute.github.io/humanibench/

Stream-DiffVSR: Low-Latency Streamable Video Super-Resolution via Auto-Regressive Diffusion

Paper arXiv cs.CV (recent)

Diffusion-based video super-resolution (VSR) methods deliver strong perceptual quality but are often unsuitable for latency-sensitive scenarios due to reliance on future frames and expensive multi-step denoising. We propose Stream-DiffVSR, a causally conditioned diffusion framework for efficient online VSR. Operating strictly on past frames, Stream-DiffVSR integrates a four-step distilled denoiser for fast inference, an Auto-regressive Temporal Guidance (ARTG) module that injects motion-aligned cues during latent denoising, and a lightweight temporal-aware decoder with a Temporal Processor Module (TPM) to enhance detail and temporal coherence. Unlike chunk-wise streaming inference, our strictly frame-by-frame causal design avoids sequence-level waiting, substantially reducing time-to-first-frame and end-to-end latency. Stream-DiffVSR processes 720p frames in 0.328 seconds on an RTX 4090 and consistently outperforms prior diffusion-based baselines. Compared with the online state-of-the-art TMP, it improves perceptual quality (LPIPS +0.095). Compared with prior diffusion-based VSR methods such as MGLD-VSR, it reduces per-frame runtime by over 130x. Moreover, Stream-DiffVSR substantially lowers time-to-first-frame for diffusion-based VSR, reducing initial delay from over 4600 seconds to 0.328 seconds, making diffusion-based VSR markedly more practical for low-latency online and streaming deployment. BRF-GS: Hyperspectral Bidirectional Reflectance Factor Modeling and Image Generation Based on 3D Gaussian Splatting

Paper arXiv cs.CV (recent)

The bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) characterizes the directional radiative properties of terrestrial surfaces. However, existing three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer models require complex scene construction and computationally intensive radiative transfer solvers, limiting efficient generation of multi-angle hyperspectral reflectance imagery. 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) offers an efficient framework for neural scene representation and novel view synthesis, but its low-order spherical harmonics representation is insufficient for complex directional reflectance, while the high dimensionality and inter-band quality differences of hyperspectral data introduce additional challenges. To address these challenges, we propose BRF-GS, a 3DGS-based framework for BRF modeling and hyperspectral reflectance image generation. BRF-GS introduces a hybrid BRDF-driven kernel to represent complex directional reflectance, selects geometry-reliable spectral bands for robust 3D scene initialization, and adopts a two-stage training strategy that decouples geometry optimization from spectral modeling. We further construct the AIR-BRF dataset, a multi-angle hyperspectral directional reflectance dataset comprising three scenes with diverse natural and artificial targets. Experiments demonstrate that BRF-GS achieves superior spatial and spectral fidelity and accurately reproduces characteristic view-dependent BRF responses. The proposed framework provides an efficient data-driven approach for BRF modeling and multi-angle hyperspectral reflectance image generation in remote sensing scenes.

ICON Decomposition: Auditing Deep Neural Networks with Multivariate Variance-based Concept-level Explanations

Paper arXiv cs.CV (recent)

Deep neural networks often exploit spurious associations, a failure known as shortcut learning. Auditing for shortcuts requires testing many candidate concepts, such as acquisition settings or demographics. Current concept-based explainability methods test one concept at a time, asking whether it is decodable from a layer. These methods flag concepts that are merely correlated with the outcome or with each other, and their scores are not comparable across layers or concept types. We introduce ICON decomposition, which quantifies how much of a layer's variance each concept explains given all other concepts and the outcome, and how much none of them explains, yielding layer-comparable, calibrated scores that suppress false positives. On simulated data, ICON recovers concept importance more accurately than seven existing methods. On skin-cancer models with inserted artifacts, it detects induced shortcuts where baselines report false positives. On two brain-imaging models, ICON's sparse explanations are validated by retraining and out-of-distribution tests.

ACE-Ego-Hand: Repurposing Video Diffusion Models for Occlusion-Robust Egocentric 3D Hand Motion Recovery

Paper arXiv cs.CV (recent)

Egocentric video offers scalable manipulation data for embodied AI, yet recovering metric 3D hand trajectories remains challenging due to severe object occlusion and frequent out-of-sight gaps. Existing single-frame and windowed temporal regressors fail when a hand shortly leaves the frame, while recent video diffusion models (VDMs) rely on heavy, stochastic multi-step sampling as pixel-space renderers. We instead repurpose VDM into a deterministic geometry encoder. A single forward pass over the clean latent exposes scene content beyond current observations, including occluded and out-of-sight hands. We introduce ACE-Ego-Hand, an offline clip-level framework that extracts features via a Deterministic Clean-Latent Encoder and decodes them with a Bidirectional Spatiotemporal Decoder. ACE-Ego-Hand recovers continuous bimanual trajectories with metric placement and no external detector, while a Ray-Based Camera Solver supports a second configuration that requires no test-time camera intrinsics. Across five egocentric benchmarks, ACE-Ego-Hand sets a new state of the art, cutting MPJPE-p by 30% on occlusion-heavy ARCTIC and 40% on HOT3D. These gains reach 46%-61% once out-of-sight hands are included in the evaluation, offering a scalable path from everyday human video to robot manipulation data.
